Just a Dream- Lyrics ?’s

In “Just a Dream” Carrie switches from second person (she) to first person (I) from the verse to the chorus. I was wondering what others thoughts were about this. I have a few theories.

1. That when she is singing the differences are to reflect how the woman feels in that moment. The time is the present, but in the beginning of the song it is as if she is looking back on herself (outer body experience almost). As it moves to the chorus she “awakes” to realize that this is really happening.

2. The song is meant to reflect two different periods of time. The first verse being the past (possibly years ago), and the chorus the here and now present. Even the second verse could be read (listened to) as being a flashback of her own life.

The first is the most plausible, but I was just wondering if others had any other takes on the lyrics?

For me both seem to fit. During my own time of loss things feel far away but also amazingly in the moment (even if they did happen years ago).
