Veterinarian Peggy Larson was once a bronco rider who has said, "without torture, there can be no rodeo."

Horses and bulls buck because of tight "bucking straps" that pinch into their genitals where caustic ointments have first been applied. By the time they are released into the arena they are frantic to rid themselves of the strap.

In rodeos, animals are tormented with electric prods and tail-twisting. Those that are lassoed at full speed, wrestled to the ground and dragged with ropes, can be injured and even killed.

When a calf runs at speeds of up to 27 miles and hour, a lasso that pulls him up short and jerks him off his feet can break bones, cause paralysis by injuring the spinal cord, sever the trachea and kill the animal. Calf-roping is outlawed in some jurisdictions.

Rodeo is condemned by the Humane society of the United States and countless other animal advocacy organizations."

I went to a local rodeo once when I was about 13. I don’t even know if it was a real rodeo it was a bunch of events for teenagers, anyway I knew some cow folks and was invited. I don’t remember to much about it but I saw was a young horse rider about my age get tossed while running a course. The horse ended up putting his hoof in the kids mouth knocking out a bunch teeth. Eeeeg.

To me, Carrie has a right to fight for what she thinks is right if this is what she‘s doing and I‘m not saying it is. Especially in America. Same goes true for people in Rodeos. To me this doesn’t mean Carrie’s anti-American but someone who is willing to take the blows for what she believes. That takes courage. At least as much a s a rodeo rider. I know, she has taken a lot of hits. Right here at this website.

Have any one of you that've so conveniently jumped on this bandwagon of the moment while proceeding to bash Ms Underwood, confirmed the story, let alone actually speak to Ms Underwood about it? NO??! Gee, imagine that...while I personally am NOT a vegetarian, love rodeos, and most generally have the highest respect for all involved with the sport, (what can I say, there are jerks in all walks) I'll reserve any judgment I may have on Ms Underwoods position regarding the stop the rodeo matter until I either hear it from her mouth, or in the very least, read it from an interview actually conducted with Ms Underwood.

Internet gossip, like all gossip, not only really sucks it's just that, gossip;idle talk and rumors. Nothing more.
Shame on each and every one of you that jumped on so blindly. If you've no more respect for yourself to behave as such, then I guess I can't really expect you to share any respect with Carrie Underwood.

I wonder if any of the guilty parties here will be as quick to apologize to Carrie when this story turns out to be nothing more than misconstrued bunk...guess if they're straight up they will..

It's circulating around FB, and the college rodeo kids are getting real upset. Last I heard, everyone is going to quit buying her music. Can't imagine what she was thinking when she decided to act against an American legacy. Those rodeo horses and bulls live a life of luxury. Calves aren't treated any differently than being roped and drug to the fire for branding. So what's next...act out against cattle ranchers??

well carrie underwood rates down there with dixie chicks.... i will pass the word and all rodeo people will quit buyin her records if she likes sharing the ratings with the dixie chicks. she will be the new person to hate....sorry carrie really liked you till you got to good for your own good. Rodeo is a cruel sport that causes terrible torture to animals. It is unworthy of the most civillized nation on earth. Nobody who calls himself or herself an "animal lover" could agree with this heinous practice. Just because Carrie Marie is against rodeo doesn't mean she's not as "Country" as the best of them. "She's proud to be an Okie from Muskogee" as Merle Haggard so aptly put it, and not only that, but she is the pride and joy of the Muskogee Nation. So nobody better call into question her countryhood.

I could not believe this when I heard Carrie had posed for PETA!. Before making such a monumental decision one should educate themselves on the actions of the groups they are representing. The western way of life is what made this country great. We should never forget where we came from because if we do we can never appreciate how far we have come.

Wilis.cepeda I call her country hood she's a bubble gum country singer. I have never liked her music but if she truly is trying to stop the sport of rodeo then I don't like her as a person. Those animals are treated better then a lot of humans they have insurance carried on them when some have no health insurance. They are fed better, housed better and transported better then a lot of humans as well. Do you know why calf ropers call calfs rubber necks because of just that there necks or basically like rubber these animals preform one night a few months out of the year for seconds. The two infamous bulls Tornado and Red Rock traveled the country side as celebraties. Just like anything someone can find the bad but in every organization I have rode in you will be disqualified if you use profanities or strike any of the animals. So spare me your cruelity my barrel horse died at the age of 27 taking my 8 year old boy to the finals in his rodeo he only passed away after we retired him to live out his days on pasture and sweet feed. Did you know horses are one of the most sesitive animals and can literally will themselves to die of heart ache. They love the attention the 20 second rush they get just as much as the rider. You want to talk about cruelity have you ever seen an ole bull rider these men weigh 120 lbs you think they are anything to bull they toss them like flies. There bodies have been broken and thats if there lucky with not much to show but tarnished belt buckles because trust me it doesn't pay like a professonal football player but, they will wear those till the day the die and be buried with there boots on and not sit on the internet complaining about nonsense. We start every rodeo with the waving of the American Flag the national anthem and a prayer that God watch over both rider and animal. I am proud to say I, my family and my children Rodeo and people like you are disgraceful.

I would love to know how many of you who think rodeo is "cruelty" to animals have actually been to one. I bet you havent. first of all the flank straps arent put on the genitals they are put on the FLANK. look it up. mabe you should do your research before you talk about some issues. any and all livestock used in rodeo are treated like kings. they have special diet plans and exercise regiments. and arent used if they are hurt or sore at all. Ive been to about 300 rodeos and i have never seen any calves or steers paralized or killed. thats just stupid. actually the goal is to keep them standing when you run down the rope. by the way calves cant run 27 miles an hour. wow... all of you hating on rodeo better be vegetarians because it is way worse in a feedlot than at a rodeo. since steers are wrestled to the ground should they outlaw high school wrestling too? yeah thatd be a good thing to do also.
